The Feds have initiated a criminal investigation against the woman who was defeated in the Delaware Senate bid this past election season. Christine O’Donnell (R) is being investigated by federal officials over alleged misuse of campaign funds. Specifically, they are looking into the accusation of O’Donnell’s use of these restricted funds for personal expenses.
An anonymous source has been cited saying that the FBI and federal prosecutors have been tentatively assigned to the case. However, the case is not yet complete and has not yet been sent to a grand jury that will hear the evidence.
Christine O’Donnell was a Tea Party favorite in this past election, and upset the election by defeating veteran Representative Mike Castle (R) in the Republican Senate Primary election. She also pulled in a state-record breaking $7 million in fundraising monies.
O’Donnell, however, was mired with negative media and questions about the early accusation of her using $20k from her campaign fund to pay for rent and other personal expenses. In September, a formal complaint was submitted to the Federal Election Commission by the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW, a non-partisan watchdog group). A spokesperson for O’Donnell suggests that these current charges will be dismissed as they are “politically motivated.”
