The Flash: Flash Suffers The Revenge of the Rogues

After Barry’s encounter with the Reverse Flash, Barry tries to improve his speed before he encounters the villain again. Meanwhile, Leonard Snart/Captain Cold returns to Central City with a new partner, Mick Rory/Heat Wave, in order to commit a new heist and defeat the Flash once and for all.

The Flash returns after a brief hiatus and it picks up right from the last episode, with Barry terrified of what the Reverse Flash could do, and becoming consumed with stopping him at all costs. It is great to see the consequences of the last episode being addressed, from Barry preparing for Reverse Flash, to the fallout of his confession to Iris, and Caitlin’s investigation of Firestorm.

Captain Cold continues to be a memorable villain, with Wentworth Miller capturing Snart’s calculating nature with ease. His chemistry with Prison Break co-star Dominic Purcell’s Heat Wave is entertaining to watch, and it bodes well for the construction of the supervillain group, The Rogues. There is also some foreshadowing ahead, as we see the parents of Hartley Rathaway, the man who will become the Pied Piper, as well as some glimpses of Victor Garber’s Doctor Martin Stein.

The best part of the episode is the way it continues to embrace its comic book roots. From Cold’s hostage situation to the showdown that ends up revealing the Flash to Central City and the rest of the world. Out of all the superhero-themed shows currently on TV, The Flash is the most successful at translating them from comic books to live-action television, and this episode is a great example of that.

“Revenge of the Rogues” continues to pick up the speed from the mid-season finale and continues to develop the characters and plot while providing excellent comic book action. Barry grows stronger, the Flash is now known, and the Rogues continue to form. Hopefully, the show continues its steady pace.
