In the heart of New York City, one house holds the unique collection of Henry Clay Frick.
Surrounded by art museums like the Met and MoMA, it is small by comparison, but it allows for a more intimate experience with the art and highlights each piece of the collection. His collection includes paintings by Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoir, Whistler, and El Greco, among others.
The museum used to be the house of Henry Frick, so all of the furniture and wall decorations are part of the experience and add a new layer to the museum. This allows the visitor to appreciate the furniture as art as well as the paintings.
The house itself was built in the early 1900s, and evokes the Gilded Age in all of its splendor. It brings the visitor back to a time of riches and beauty.
The most central and well-known area, the Garden Court (pictured), showcases the architecture and the art in a fountain surrounded by palms and sculptures. Visitors are often surprised to learn that this area used to be a driveway that was built when the museum had to expand!
What is amazing about the Frick Collection is that it has continued to grow past Henry Frick’s lifetime and is changing even now with new art being acquired and new exhibits. One third of the art displayed now was bought after Henry Frick’s death!
