The Weinstein Company Passes on Clerks 3

Fans of Kevin Smith, specifically fans of Clerks, have gotten some bad news, as The Weinstein Company has apparently passed on Smith’s pitch for Clerks 3.

The Weinstein Company owns the rights to the Clerks series, but Smith has told ScreenDaily “[The Weinsteins] passed. I went in with a $6 million budget and they were like, ‘Oh no, Kevin. This is too high.’ Bob offered us distribution, but they weren’t going to finance it.”

Smith assured fans earlier this year that “CLERKS III is still coming. I love the script so much, I’ll make it happen, I promise.”  But that appears to be in doubt now after the Weinstein company passed, as Smith may have to raise the money himself, or make changes to the script that lower the budget.

It’s been eight years since Smith made Clerks 2, which made $24 million from a budget of $5 million, following the original Clerks, which made over $3 million, but cost only $30,000 to make.

In the meantime, Smith is promoting his latest movie, a horror flick called Tusk, which is set to be released later this year.
