‘The X Factor’ | Recap: Miami Auditions [Video]

On Wednesday, Sept. 21, the premiere of the U.S. version of “The X Factor” took place on FOX. 12.1 million people tuned in to watch Simon Cowell’s brand new singing competition. The first half of the episode of the new show took place in Miami, Florida, where at first the talent seemed nonexistent.

The judges gave a lot of no’s to the first few acts, which caused tears, fits, and angry family members causing trouble in the back. No one made it through until the middle of the day, when Nick Voss auditioned and stole the hearts of the judges.

Nick Voss, the 21-year-old from Hialeah, FL, sang Elvis Presley’s “Trouble.” Even though his singing wasn’t perfect, his stage presence was fantastic. Simon even said he absolutely loved him!

Next up came 14-year-old Ashley Decker. Another normal teenager? Nope! Ashley announced to the judges that she could call ghosts. After she performed her not so good rendition of Jessie J’s “Price Tag” and was told that she wasn’t going through the next round, the lights began blinking on and off. Judge Nicole Scherzinger was freaking out, because she believed the teenager had called in real ghosts when they rejected her.

After another audition, 55-year-old ex-music teacher Marivana Viscuso sings “Summertime.” Somehow Marivana gets through with four yes votes. Marivana is scary and looks (and sings) like a witch. Simon told the singer, “This is gonna sound odd, but it’s meant as a compliment — when I hear you, I think of wolves mating in the forest.”

Next the judges let through a four-member girl group called 2Squar’d, a teacher named Kendra Williams, a music teacher named Brendhan O’Hara, and a male soprano named Jeremiah Pagan.

Miami’s final audition comes from 18-year-old Melanie Amaro from Sunrise, FL. Melanie sings “Listen” from Dreamgirls and the entire arena goes crazy and Nicole is reduced to tears. Melanie receives four yeses from the judges.
