Tony Awards Winners, Losers, Ratings

The 66th Tony Awards were held last night at the Beacon Theater in New York City. The event was hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and broadcast live on CBS.

We’ll get to the winners in just a moment. First though, let’s talk about the big loser of the evening. The Tony Awards itself. According to E! Online, this year’s telecast was almost a million viewers short of last year’s. The 2012 Tony Awards was watched by fewer viewers than any previous Tony Awards telecast. Nielsen overnight ratings pegged the audience at just over 6 million.

Why the disinterest? E! says it’s the competition. The premiere of the fifth season of True Blood on HBO, and the fifth season finale of Mad Men on AMC, both aired last night as well. Another factor is that the talk of Broadway, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, was only nominated for two awards.
