Top Tech Toys For 2014

A watch that teaches kids to tell time while snapping pics?

A tiny ball that follows what you draw?

How about an update on the classic game Simon?

All of these represent some of the best new toys for the 2014 toy shopping season.

According to the independent research firm Oppenheim Toy Portfolio, because there is no real “it” toy this year, consumers actually have better choices when it comes to picking out that perfect techie toy for the little ones.

Overall this year, experts have noted better uses of technology and the ways it’s integrated into play. (Although not a tech toy, Oppenheim gave the Platinum top toy award this season to the Faber-Castell Gel Sticks.)

If you’re buying for kids between the ages of 3 and 9, be on the lookout for some of these top tech toys this season:

littleBits: Touted as a fun, easy way to learn electronics, littleBits’ award-winning module libraries range from the super simple to wireless, programmable complexity.

MOSS: Although a bit on the pricey side, MOSS helps little inventors turn their mad designs into rolling, pulling reality. If kids can snap together color-coded cubes, they can build a robot.

Sphero Ollie: The Ollie is the (much more fun) followup to the popular Sphero Ball. Controlled via smartphone or tablet, the Ollie does whatever you do – even managing some seemingly impossible balancing tricks.

Little Scholar: The difference between this tablet and simply using your existing tablet and downloading kid content is Little Scholar’s reputation for producing its own high-quality material. It includes over 150 apps, songs, videos, and eBooks.
