Turkey Burgers sold at Sam’s Club are being recalled after a number of people became sick after eating them.

The recall of approximately 55,000 pounds of turkey burgers includes four pound boxes of Jennie-O’s “All Natural Turkey Burgers With Seasonings: Lean White Meat,” with a sell by date of Dec. 23, 2011. Each box contains twelve, 1/3 pound, individually wrapped turkey burgers.

Jennie-O Turkey Store, based in Willmar, Minnesota, is recalling the turkey burgers due to the possibility of salmonella contamination. According to the recall announcement, there is currently an ongoing investigation being conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). More raw turkey products may be recalled as the investigation proceeds.

The investigation has identified 12 people in the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Washington, and Wisconsin who have been diagnosed with Salmonella Hadar infection. The illnesses all occurred between December 2010 and March 2011. Three of the 12 “specifically reported eating this product prior to illness onset,” according to the FSIS.

The Jennie-O Turkey Store is advising consumers not to consume the turkey burgers. They ask that consumers return the product to Sam’s Club for a full refund. They have posted additional information for affected consumers online at jennieo.com/recall.
