Archer Farms Ground Turmeric, sold at Target stores, is being recalled by its manufacturer, B&M, Inc, due to excessive levels of lead.

Turmeric is a spice. It has a  somewhat bitter, hot pepper flavor with hits of mustard It’s  often used in curries or other South Asian or Middle Eastern dishes.

The recalled Archer Farms Ground Turmeric was sold in glass bottles. The net weight listed on the product is 2.6 oz, or 74 grams. It was sold through Target stores from June of 2009 through February of 2010, in the states of AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, and WI.

As per the announcement, “Too much lead can cause health problems, including delayed mental and physical development and learning deficiencies.” They also note in the announcement of the recall that young children, infants, and pregnant women should especially avoid exposure to lead. It advises those that are concerned about lead levels to contact their doctor or health clinic.

The recalled turmeric can be identified through its UPC code 0-85239-02612-0.
