Walmart is bringing mini versions of its retail stores to college campuses.
The company recently announced plans for a concept store on Arizona State University. It’s going to be part of the retailer’s ‘Walmart On Campus’ initiative.
A similar mini-store is already present in Fayetteville at the University of Arkansas, and the third one is in plans for Georgia Tech.
The store at Arizona State will only have 10 staff and has plans to stock grocery, pharmacy and convenience items, along with merchandise of the campus.
The grand opening will be held in May, and there’s already a Facebook page about the new store.
Talking to Phoenix Business Journal, store manager Mario Espino said ‘Walmart on Campus is a small-format test store that allows us to bring our low prices to students in a convenient location’.
He also added no alcohol will be sold at the store.
Georgia Tech store is going to be about 2,500 square feet, while Arizona State store will be 5,000 square feet.
That’s quite small compared to mega-sized Walmarts, which are often more than 180,000 square feet.
According to Advertising Age, the mini-stores can be used by Walmart for branching into untapped markets with urban populations.
