Ann Curry says it wasn’t slipping ratings, on-air gaffes or a lack of chemistry with Matt Lauer that cost her the co-hosting gig of NBC’s Today show.
Instead, Curry, who still works for the network on other shows and projects, claims her “too colorful” style was the reason she was given the boot from the morning show.
“One day I wore a multicolored dress and someone asked if I was trying to be Toucan Sam. But I chose it because I thought, This will perk up America. I’m encouraged by my bosses to wear these ridiculously high-heeled shoes because women say, ‘I love your shoes!’ So if it makes women happy, I’ll wear them. But I’m still going to be me… I’ve tried to wear clogs and flats on TV and it hasn’t gone well with my bosses,” Curry told Ladies Home Journal in an article just prior to her exit.
Whether it was the emergence of Good Morning America as a ratings threat or the revamping of the CBS This Morning show, NBC opted to replace Curry in favor of Savannah Guthrie as co-host of Today.
It’s too early to tell if the new Lauer-Guthrie tandem can hold off ‘Today’s’ ratings slide, but they appear to be making an effort to create chemistry by joking around with each other.
Viewers will be the ones to decide if their attempts at developing chemistry is working, or if it appears to be forced.
