We’re Spending More Online This Year

Good news for online retailers. ComScore just released a study that found that us shoppers are spending  more money online this holiday season that we have in the past.

Despite the sluggish economy and high unemployment rate, Americans went online and spent 15% more during the first 39 days of the November/December 2011 holiday shopping season that we did during those same days in 2010.

According to ComScore, from November 2 to December 10 of last year we spent $21.4 billion online. This year, during those same comparable shopping dates (November 1 to December 9), $24.6 billion was spent.

Sales were higher this year across all of the individual time periods that ComScore studied. Thanksgiving Day saw an 18% increase in sales this year. Black Friday sales increased by 26% this year. Cyber Monday was up by 22%.

ComScore began tracking online spending in 2001. This year’s Cyber Monday was the biggest day for online sales to date, with more than $1.2 billion spent on that one day. The second biggest day was December 5 of this year, with $1.18 billion spent.

Yesterday was Green Monday, a name coined by eBay to describe the Monday that falls near the second week mark in December. In the past, Green Monday has been one of the heaviest online shopping days of the year. The numbers aren’t in for yesterday yet, but it’s expected to fall in line with the rest of the big 2011 shopping season and be one of the biggest Green Mondays ever.
