Will Smith And Jaden Smith In ‘After Earth’ Trailer [Video]

The trailer for After Earth, M. Night Shyamalan’s latest directorial effort starring Will and Jaden Smith, went online today. Will this purely sci-fi effort see a return to greatness for the director?

Starring Will Smith and his son, Jaden Smith (from The Karate Kid remake with Jackie Chan), After Earth tells the tale of a father and son that get spaceship-wrecked on earth 1,000 years after the planet has been abandoned by humanity.

It may sound sort of similar to another film that recently released a trailer, what with the abandoned earth and all, but After Earth has something that Oblivion definitely doesn’t have – a reputation to rebuild.

M. Night Shyamalan started his directorial career strong with the Oscar-nominated horror film The Sixth Sense in 1999. Not only was the film a critical success, but it brought in the crowd at the box office, bringing in over $670 worldwide off of a $40 million budget.

From there, he wrote/directed the cult hit Unbreakable and alien invasion flick Signs to mediocre reviews. Every film Shyamalan has made since then has come back with diminishing returns. His last two films as a writer/director, The Happening and The Last Airbender, have both been critically panned.

One constant in Shyamalan’s films, however, has been the star power. He’s worked with Bruce Willis, Mel Gibson, Sigourney Weaver, Samuel L. Jackson, and Mark Wahlberg, to name a few. With After Earth, he adds Will and Jaden Smith to that list, both of whom have made a series of sound judgment calls in the films they decide to be part of (at least in the blockbuster moneymaker department). Not everyone may like the new Karate Kid, for example, but it made $176 million in the U.S. box office.

With all that in mind, will the summer blockbuster king headlining his latest feature be enough to help gain back the movie-going public’s trust that Shyamalan’s next film won’t be another flop?

After Earth releases into theaters on June 7, 2013. Until then, there’s always the trailer, which can be found below.
