The third Grand Slam of the tennis calendar, Wimbledon, will begin from June 20 this season and Rafael Nadal will go into the competition as a favorite to defend his title. Incidentally, the Wimbledon this season celebrates its 125th edition anniversary.
Interestingly, Roger Federer will not go into the competition as the top seeded player in the men’s category; that pride of place belonging to the French Open winner and defending champion Nadal.
The Spaniard has won two Wimbledon titles as compared to the six that Federer has been victorious in but with Nadal winning at last two of the three years, it would be a keen tussle between the two legends. Novak Djokovic will be seeded second, but all eyes will be on Andy Murray, who will bid to become the first ever British player from the open era to win the Wimbledon.
Murray had earlier won the Queen’s tournament.
Caroline Wozniacki will be the women’s top seeded player, but she will have stiff competition from second seeded Vera Zvonareva and third-seed and French Open winner Li Na. Interestingly, Serena Williams makes her comeback from an injury but despite being the defending champio, she is the number seven seed.
Kim Clijsters has withdrawn from the Wimbledon – which takes the much of the sheen off the women’s competition.
Wimbledon 2011 begins from Monday, June 20 this year.
