The movie “The Help”, is based on a best-selling novel by Kathryn Stockett about three women in Mississippi who come together despite their extreme differences for a secret writing project that breaks societal rules of the 60s, and ultimately puts them all at risk. As the result of this unlikely friendship, they shift the paradigm of how the women of their town view one another despite their stations in life as mothers, daughters, and service givers during the rigid social lines of society in their Mississippi town.
““The Help”, the movie, is an alliance between friends Kathryn Stockett, the author of the best-selling novel of the same name, and Tate Taylor, the film’s writer-director. This story is about three unlikely friends who embark on a writing project that winds up exposing scandals and other civil-rights unjust activities that were happening in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960s.
The movie opens in theatres on Friday, August 12, 2011, and stars Emma Stone as Skeeter, Viola Davis of “Doubt” fame as Aibileen, and Octavia Spencer as Minny – three townswomen who comprise an extraordinary sisterhood that empowers them to cross lines that initially shocks the people of Jackson but ultimately causes profound and much needed change.
In a video interview by Coming Soon.net, Emma Stone, who plays “Skeeter” her first major dramatic role, talked about how she got into character as Skeeter. She is quoted as saying “Since it’s based on a book, I felt so lucky,” she said. “When I read a book, it’s like I know those characters and my interpretation of those characters so well. I’ve never gotten to be in a movie version of a book before, so Skeeter felt pretty fleshed out for me as a reader…there’s 120 short pages in a script; there’s 444 long pages in “The Help”. It was just so incredibly helpful because I didn’t know too many people who were 23 in 1963.”
“The Help” is described as deeply moving, filled with humor and hope – a timeless story about the courage of anyone who feels strongly enough to change the way people think.
