To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of ‘The Sound of Music’, ABC originally aired the 20/20 Special: The Untold Story of ‘The Sound of Music’ on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at 10 P.M. (EST).
The show was hosted by Diane Sawyer and gave fans an inside look at the people and places that made this movie/musical so beloved for 50 years and counting.
Sawyer traveled to various locations for this special, including Salzburg, Austria, to interview the movie’s star Julie Andrews (Maria) and get her thoughts on everything from her favorite scene to her least favorite song.
Fans get to revisit all the memorable spots in the film, from the gazebo, fountain and St. Michael’s Church to the breathtaking meadow where Maria belts out the famous opening song: “The Hills Are Alive, With The Sound of Music”..
The meadow, which is in Germany – not Austria, is owned by a very private individual who does not allow it to be opened to the public, so ABC is really giving fans something they won’t see anywhere else.
In addition to interviewing Andrews, there are also interviews with her husband and co-star in the movie, Christopher Plummer, and the real von Trapp family, who are the inspiration for the movie.
