21 Skull Fractures Later, Bumbo Baby Seats Remain In Some Stores

Bumbo-Baby-SeatFour million Bumbo Baby seats are being voluntarily recalled to add warnings and seatbelts to the infant seats.

In November of last year, we reported that the Bumbo Baby seats were the subject of a warning issued by the US Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC). The CPSC’s warning reminded parents and caregivers that the seats had been recalled in 2007, and that the company should be contacted for free warning stickers to be placed on the seats.

At that time, despite numerous reports of injuries, including 22 (now reported as 21) skull fractures, the product remained in stores.

Today’s recall includes seats sold as recently as this month. Now, along with more warning stickers, the company is providing “”a free repair kit, which includes: a restraint belt with a warning label, installation instructions, safe use instructions.” The repair kits are being made available to consumers at www.recall.BumboUSA.com.

During the products first recall in 2007, the CPSC described the problem as such: “If the seat is placed on a table, countertop, chair, or other elevated surface, young children can arch their backs, flip out of the Bumbo seat, and fall onto the floor, posing a risk of serious head injuries.”

The Bumbo Baby seats subject to today’s recall were sold at major retailers between August 2003 through August 2012. Stores selling the Bumbo Baby seats included Sears, Target, Toys R Us (including Babies R Us), USA Babies, and Walmart, according to the recall statement.

Even after today’s recall, the Bumbo Baby seats included in the recall still remain available through Amazon.com and USAbaby.com. They were not found online at Walmart, Target, Toys R US and Babies R Us.
