“Day 9: 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.”of 24: Live Another Day hinged on Chloe O’Brian (Mary Lynn Rajskub) confessing to Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) . Chloe is distracted by memories of her recently-deceased husband and son. Rather than scold her for missing their target, Jack imparts affection and advice.

While Chloe tearfully recounts her family’s murder, an end intended for her, Jack assures her that the only way forward is to honor her departed loved ones though her actions.  He pleads with Chloe to help him in preventing the needless deaths of others.  This call to help Jack save the world has another side.

Margot Al-Harazi (Michelle Fairley), too, is a grieving widow. Her way forward- avenge the her husbands death. Her husband, a known terrorist, was killed by an American drone strike.  She crafted an elaborate plan to turn her enemy’s weapons on them, but her vengeance doesn’t stop there. She and her daughter aim to change history by starting World War III.

Margot’s misguided sense of honor is amplified by the British citizens crying for the blood of a young American drone operator who is accused of killing four British soldiers. The soldier is Al-Harazi’s scapegoat, but the crowd is resistant to reason.

President Heller’s diplomatic efforts fail to smooth things over in Parliament. As soon as he begins his address, the angry officials cry for justice and lay blame at Heller’s feet. Like Al-Harazi, they want to honor the fallen by spilling more blood.

Will Jack succeed where Heller’s diplomacy failed? Bauer has evidence that the American soldier is innocent, but we can’t help but wonder if that will matter. After all, the murders could never have occurred if the United States did not have armed drones in the first place.

Will Margot’s plan advance to the next phase now that Kate Morgan (Yvonne Strahovski) is hot on Bauer’s trail? He planned to discretely access the president with the help of Adrian Cross (Michael Wincott), but Cross sabotaged Jack’s peaceful efforts. This double cross begs the question- is Cross in cahoots with Margot?

Jack’s credibility is already in question, time will tell if his violent diversion causes old allies to turn against him. We will have to wait and see next week when episode 4, “”Day 9: 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.” airs next Monday at 9:00 p.m. on Fox.
