The Nintendo 3DS was released in the United States on March 27th. Sales reports from its first week in the U.S. market were released, showing just under 400,000 units sold in that first week.

No stores reported massive sellouts. In fact, according to Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, the lack of sellouts was planned by the corporation. In an interview with USA Today, Fils-Aime stated that it was a strategic move on the part of Nintendo to make sure that both the stores and the distribution centers had plenty of stock.

The 3DS was released with some simple titles like PilotWings and NintendoDog. While these may not compare with Pokemon, Nintendo is preparing to launch the next wave of software for the 3DS, including E-shop and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on June 19th. Nintendo has also joined forces with Netflix and will be releasing the Netflix software for 3DS later in the summer.

Although no online app store is currently available, Nintendo is working on a number of developments that, although not necessary for actual game play, will enhance the play.

According to the company, they are pleased with the sales reports for the 3DS during its first week in the United States and anticipate continued sales with the coming software launches. Only time will tell if the initial hype of the 3DS will carry it through as the next handheld gaming system or if it will fizzle out into yesterday’s platform.
