A recent report by the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA) announced that all over the counter infant acetaminophen drops will be discontinued in favor of single concentration medications.
The change is completely voluntary on the part of the manufacturers and will hopefully cut down on instances of acetaminophen overdose in infants.
The CHPA does state that parents should not worry about using their existing infant acetaminophen drops as long as they are careful about reading the dosage instructions. They should also consult with their child’s pediatrician to ensure that it is safe for their child to take acetaminophen products.
Until the changes go into affect in mid 2011, parents will still be able to purchase liquid acetaminophen in varying concentrations, but soon a concentration of 160 milligrams of acetaminophen to 5 milliliters solution will be the only type available for children under 12 years of age.
Scot Melville, president of the CHPA, stated, “We are committed to providing parents and caregivers the tools and information they need to help give their children the right amount of these medicines.”
The products will now come with either dosing syringes or measuring cups to properly gauge doses.
The CHPA encourages parents to always read the instructions on the label.
