Amazon just announced the launch of the new Kindle Owners’ Lending Library.
The Kindle Owners’ Lending Library will be available to members of Amazon Prime. The new Lending Library will allow members to borrow Kindle books from Amazon for free. According to Amazon, thousands of books, including over 100 current and former New York Times bestsellers, are available in the library.
In the announcement, Amazon.com Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos said “Owning a Kindle just got even better. Today, we’re introducing a new Prime benefit built for Kindle: The Kindle Owners’ Lending Library. Prime Members now have exclusive access to a huge library of books to read on any Kindle device at no additional cost and with no due dates.”
Members will be limited to borrowing one book at a time, but may return books and borrow another directly through their Kindle device.
A variety of both fiction and nonfiction books will be available in the library. Some examples that Amazon provided are Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game, The Big Short and Liars’ Poker by Michael Lewis, TheHunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins, and Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen, The Finkler Question, Guns, Germs, and Steel, Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential, and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
Borrowers will be able to add notes, bookmarks, and highlights just as they do in current Kindle books they own. The data will be saved so that users that re-borrow, or purchase, the book later will still have that information available.
Amazon Prime membership costs $79 a year. It began as a program that offered free two day shipping on a wide range of Amazon products. It has since grown to include free streaming of thousands of movies and TV shows, and now thousands of books through the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library.
It’s no coincidence that Amazon is offering a rapidly growing amount of content just as the holiday season, and the release of the new Kindle Fire, nears. The Kindle Fire is designed as a multi-media tablet geared toward accessing content from Amazon. It is currently available for pre-ordering, at $199, through Amazon.
