Amazon Releases This Year’s "Well Read Cities" List

booksAmazon released their annual list of the “Most Well-Read Cities in America” this morning. Coming out in front of the Most Well-Read Cities is Alexandria, VA. They were followed by Cambridge, MA, in second place, and Berkley, CA, in third. A full list is posted below.

According to Amazon, the cities were ranked by “compiling sales data of all book, magazine and newspaper sales in both print and Kindle format since June 1, 2011, on a per capita basis in cities with more than 100,000 residents.”

It’s interesting to note that the city that ranked number one on the Most Well-Read Cities list, Alexandria, ranked number two in Amazon’s Most Romantic Cities list a few months ago. The Most Romantic Cities list is based on the city with the most purchases of romance novels, relationship books, romantic comedies, Barry White albums, and sexual wellness products, on a per capita basis. Apparently Alexandria is just full of romantic, book loving, Amazon shoppers. Amazon backs that up, mentioning in their release that Alexandria topped the list when it came to purchases of books in the Romance category.

They also found that shoppers in Berkeley ordered the most books from the Travel category, Boulder shoppers purchased the most from the Health, Fitness and Dieting category, and Cambridge shoppers ordered the most books from the Business and Investing category.
