AMC and Next Games have announced that a mobile gaming experience will companion season 5 of The Walking Dead TV series.
Not much is known about the project at this time, but executives from Next and AMC seem excited to get to work on the series’ first mobile adaptation.
“Our take on the undead survival franchise will match the against-all-odds action and tension of the TV series,” said Teemu Huuhtanen of Next Games.
While the television universe of AMC’s Walking Dead has been previously adapted for consoles in the Survival Instinct side-story featuring Daryl and Merle, reviews for the title did not fare well.
To reassure audiences about the Dead game that’s currently in development, AMC president Charlie Collier asserted that this new project will be an absolute “service to the fans.”
It’s worth noting that Telltale Games has had immense critical success with their own Walking Dead game franchise, which just launched a brand new episode this past Tuesday.
This mobile title differs from that formula because it’s likely to focus on popular characters like Rick and Carl Grimes that are found on the network show.
While Next Games is a young development team, its current employees include creative minds from major software outfits like Rovio and Disney.
Can a companion TV experience like this actually work, or is AMC grasping at straws?
