The road to the top 24 on American Idol was filled with emotional stories and the final judgment that chose who would perform for America was no less emotional.

Many that were sent home over the past two days were encouraged by the judges to come back next year and try again because they were just too good to quit. Randy, Jennifer and Steven all made it clear repeatedly as they announced their decision one by one that they had a large pool of talent and only 24 spots to fill.

Jennifer Lopez had a hard time. After telling Chris Medina that he did not make it through she had a small breakdown and cried that she did not want to do this anymore. After composing herself she went on to help deliver the good, and bad, news to the many hopefuls that waited.

According to Randy the most talented person ever on Idol was Casey Abrams and he made it through. He also said the best performance ever was the Hollywood version of God Bless the Child by Jacob Lusk, another top 24 contestant.

Many favorites from initial auditions went on including James Durbin, the young father who has both Asperger’s Syndrome and Tourettes,  and Jovany Barreto who bared all at his audition. Some favorites were sent home as they didn’t come across as strong enough to make it all the way.

Tuesday begins the first round of live performances by the men followed by voting. Wednesday will bring the first round of performances by the women.
