American Idol’s Amber Holcomb Shines Bright in First Sudden Death Round

Tonight on Fox’s American Idol Season 12, a new round called “Sudden Death” was introduced.

How does it work, you may ask? Well, the series of sudden death rounds, which kicked off at The Mirage Hotel in Vegas, will extend over four two-hour episodes spread out over the next two weeks.

During each episode, 10 contestants will have the chance to sing a song of their choosing and perform it in front of a live audience.

The judges then have the power to decide who will stay and who will go.

Each night they will have to choose five of the contestants to move on to the Top 20, while the other five will be sent home.

Tonight 10 girls performed, but one shined bright like a diamond. Cue Rihanna’s polarizing “Diamond” song.

The performance of the night goes to Amber Holcomb.

Holcomb auditioned last season, but got cut early during the Las Vegas episode.

Boy oh boy, she brought it and then some this season.

She preformed a Sinatra classic “My Funny Valentine” with impeccable vocals and unmatched grace.

She hit every note with perfect control as she infused the song with lovely runs and a powerful vibrato.

Holcomb even received a standing ovation by all the judges, except Nicki Minaj.

Keith Urban expressed how great Holcomb was technically, especially in terms of breath control.

He stated: “It was so great to watch you. You took a song that Randy would call an ‘old song’ and made it timeless. You knocked it out of the park.”

Minaj emphasized how Holcomb’s vocal ability is an “ A+++ and top of the class.” She continued, “I am proud you came back and made an effort to come out of your shell.”

Randy Jackson reiterated how her vocal was amazing as she took control of the song and “stood out like a shining diamond.” Here we go!! Cue Rihanna’s “Diamond” song once again please!

Mariah Carey explained how she loved Holcomb’s interpretation of the song. She proclaimed: “I can’t wait for you to hit the studio and make a record.”

After Holcomb’s stellar performance, the judges made their final decisions on which girls would make it through to the next stage of the competition.

Who were the 5 singers who made it through?
1) Tenna Torres
2) Kree Harrison
3) Adriana Latonio
4) Angela Miller
5) Amber Holcomb
