Apple is counting down to its 25 billionth app download.
As of publication time, the countdown (or should we say countup?) is at 24,305,913,970 and going fast. The actual countdown clock is here.
As part of the promotion surrounding the countdown to the 25 billionth app, Apple is going to award one person a $10,000 App Store Gift Card. The summary of the contest says the person who downloads the 25 billionth app will be the winner… but an app download is not required to win. So how does that work?
Well, the official rules include this:
“For purposes of the Promotion, the downloading of the 25 billionth app is considered to be either the downloading of the 25 billionth app from the App Store or the receipt of the non-purchase entry after the download of the 24,999,999,999th app, whichever comes first.”
So the winner is the one who either downloads the 25 billionth app or submits a non-purchase entry form after the 24,999,999,999th app has been
downloaded, but before the 25 billionth app is downloaded. Pretty fine timing. The non-purchase entry form is here.
It was just over a year ago that we were reporting on the 10 billionth Apple app download (see story here). Apple gave away a $10,000 credit to the Apple Store for that milestone too. The 10 billion app download mark was reached aproximately 2 1/2 years after the App Store opened. It only took about 13 more months to reach the upcoming 25 billion mark..
