Some shoppers that purchased the new iPad from Apple are complaining of poor Wi-Fi reception. A thread started on Apple’s iPad forums has garnered over 850 comments so far, and has recorded more than 70,000 views.
The complaints have been heard by Apple, according to 9to5Mac.com, who says they have gained access to a leaked AppleCare internal memo that states that Apple is investigating the issue. The memo instructs Apple employees to ‘capture’ affected units, including the AC adapter and USB cable. According to a source quoted by 9to5Mac, ‘Capture’ indicates the unit should be packed up and shipped back to Apple for investigation immediately, with the shopper receiving a replacement.
Apple is garnering quite a reputation for product launches that are huge successes when it comes to sales, but are followed by bad publicity from technical or quality issues. There was the iPhone 4 ‘antennagate’ issue, which just saw the resolution of a class-action suit last month. Battery and other issues after the launch of the iPhone 4S. And now the new iPad has triggered questions involving the heat it generates, possible battery charging issues, and Wi-Fi issues.
The complaints concerning Wi-Fi reception include weak signal strength when other devices at the same location report strong signals, slow transfer speeds, dropped connections, and sometimes not being able to find an existing Wi-Fi network when one is available.
