AT&T is now providing its high-speed 4G LTE service to 11 additional markets including some of the largest cities in the US.
The list of cities that have just been added to the 4G network are: New York City; Orlando; Austin; Los Angeles; Phoenix; San Diego; San Jose; Raleigh; Chapel Hill; and Oakland.
AT&T, which has often been criticized for its poor connections, has been rapidly adding new markets to its 4G LTE network. In November we reported on AT&T’s 4G LTE service becoming available in the cities of Charlotte; Indianapolis; Kansas City.; Las Vegas; Oklahoma City; and San Juan, PR to the network.
Cities that were on the network prior to that were: Athens; Atlanta; Baltimore; Boston; Chicago; Dallas-Forth Worth; Houston; San Antonio; and Washington, DC.
The addition of the new markets means that AT&T is now providing access to 4G LTE service in 26 major market areas and 74 million consumers, according to a statement from AT&T that was released today.
Discussing the expansion, PCMag pointed out that one of the hottest high tech phones of the moment, the iPhone 4S, won’t be able to take advantage of AT&T’s 4G LTE service. But AT&T has an answer for that. It all get’s pretty thick into geek weeds, but while the iPhone 4S is basically a 3G phone, AT&T’s new network includes HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul and LTE technologies, giving it 4G-like speeds. This is what AT&T is referring to when they in the statement that “Another benefit of AT&T’s network strategy is that only AT&T’s network lets your iPhone 4S download three times faster.”
AT&T expects to have most of its 4G LTE network deployed by the end of 2013.
