AT&T Will Unlock Smartphones For Customers

Smartphone unlocking in U.S is on a roller coaster ride, with unlocking becoming illegal, a petition to making unlocking legal again getting the required signatures and a new bill requesting to modify the law on unlocking cell phones.

However, there’s at least one carrier that has no problem with unlocking handsets: AT&T.

The carrier recently announced  they would assist customers who which to have their phones unlocked.

This isn’t a surprise though, as carriers didn’t have any issue with processing unlocking request in the first place.

The procedure isn’t going to be an easy one, however, many customers may find it more than they want to deal wiht.

AT&T posted their position on unlocking phones, their requirements, and what they will do. on their public policy website;

While we think the Librarian’s careful decision was reasonable, the fact is that it has very little impact on AT&T customers. As we make clear on our website, if we have the unlock code or can reasonably get it from the manufacturer, AT&T currently will unlock a device for any customer whose account has been active for at least sixty days; whose account is in good standing and has no unpaid balance; and who has fulfilled his or her service agreement commitment. If the conditions are met we will unlock up to five devices per account per year. We will not unlock devices that have been reported lost or stolen.

Do you qualify, and will you be getting yours unlocked?
