The Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl, pitting Louisville against Southern Mississippi, was a hotly contested battle on Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, FL, tonight.
At one point, Louisville was down 14 points to nothing, but battled back to win the game in the final minutes. The final score was Louisville 31, Southern Miss 28.
The win was Charlie Strong’s first bowl win since becoming head coach of Louisville. During a post game interview on ESPN, Strong said “I just told the guys, just go out and play 60 minutes, just for those guys” (referring to the seniors).
Johnny Patrick, who will be going to the Senior Bowl, was named the Capital One Player of the Game. He had two tackles, a forced fumble, and blocked a field goal, which was the difference in the game.
The game was tied in the fourth quarter at 28, after a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Jeremy Wright. A 36-yard field goal by Chris Philpott’s, with 6:30 remaining in the game, gave the Louisville Cardinals their first lead of the night. Which they held to the end.
Southern Miss Quarterback Austin Davis threw for 205 yards and two touchdowns during the game. He now has the Southern Miss’s record for career TD passes, with 53 TD’s in three seasons.
