The running of the 144th Belmont Stakes takes place today (June 9). Post time is 6:40 pm ET.
The big news about the Belmont Stakes today is that Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner I’ll Have Another has been scratched from the race.
Yesterday it was announced that the three year old Thoroughbred was being retired before having a chance to run in the final leg of the Triple Crown. If he had run and won, I’ll Have Another would have been the first horse in 34 years to win the Triple Crown. The reason for the early retirement? A swollen tendon on his left front leg.
I’ll Have Another’s departure leaves a field of 11. Dullahan, who placed third in the Kentucky Derby, is the current favorite. Post positions, jockeys, and odds at publication time are:
