Today is the birthday of the world’s largest video sharing platform, YouTube.
YouTube was formed by three PayPal employees: Steve Chen, Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim.
The first YouTube video, uploaded back in 2005, was named “Me at the Zoo,” and featured Karim. The video is still available at YouTube and is one of the most viewed videos.
YouTube is now owned by Google. The site available in 54 different languages and more than 100 hours video are uploaded to the service every minute.
According to YouTube, about one billion people across the world upload their content every single month.
Marking its 8th birthday, the YouTube team thanked their users on the official YouTube blog today, saying:
“And so, on our eighth birthday, we’d like to thank you for making YouTube the special place that it is. For showing us how video can create connections, transcend borders and make a difference. For clicking these links even if you aren’t sure what they’ll be, but you trust us. In short, thanks for making us better in big ways and small ones, too. We can’t wait to see what you come up with next.”
Just for fun, here are the top 8 most popular videos, as currently ranked by YouTube:
