‘Better Call Saul’ Review:Better Than ‘Breaking Bad’ [Extended Trailer]

‘Better Call Saul’, the highly anticipated prequel to AMC’s smash hit ‘Breaking Bad’ debuts in just over 2 weeks, but based on previews and critic reviews it looks like it’s bigger and better than it’s predecessor.

While the show does have a similar look and feel to ‘Breaking Bad’ (why fix what isn’t broken?) the lines are sharper and the show seem a lot more clever, like a student who surpasses their teacher.

The show will air it’s first 2 episodes back-to-back on February 8 &9 and takes place back in 2002, 6 years before Saul (Bob Odenkirk) became Saul, both figuratively and literally.

Making a prequel can be a tricky scenario since fans already know how it ends, but “Better Call Saul’ makes the journey to that end so compelling and fun fans won’t care.

There are references and hints to ‘Breaking Bad’ fans will appreciate  but not so  many that new viewers will feel like they’re missing out.

Saul’s presence could always fill the screen and steal a scene and he’s no different here, except he’s not actually Saul yet.

Turns out Saul’s real name is Jimmy McGill and he’s just like every other lawyer trying to get by and make a “name” for himself in good old Albuquerque.

However, it’s obvious fro the get-go that this is the Saul fans know and love, as evidenced by his: “Do you remember being 19?” line in episode 1.

While that line sounds whimsical and light- when you see why he is saying it and who he’s saying it in reference to, you’ll see why it’s anything but how it sounds and oh so Saul.

There are some great cameos to start things off, including Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) who is retired, but harmless at this point and working as a parking lot attendant at the Albuquerque courthouse.

It is intriguing to see familiar faces in unfamiliar settings interact, which is a big part of the magic to this show.

If the rest of the season follows in the footsteps of the first 2 episodes then ‘Better Call Saul’, like it’s namesake, is destined for bigger and better.
