This morning Barnes & Noble announced NOOK Video as the newest service for their popular Nook devices.

Exactly which Nook devices the new video service will be available on is a bit of a mystery. There’s little doubt that it will be on the NOOK Tablet. The NOOK e-readers aren’t equipped to handle such a thing. But what about the NOOK Color, which can run Netflix?

We contacted B&N, who simply replied “We have not announced what Nook devices the service will be available on.”

According to the company’s press release, this service will be used to download a large variety of blockbuster hits and classic movies, as well as original TV shows.

Some of the studios backing Barnes & Noble’s newest addition include HBO, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Warner Bros. Entertainment, Viacom, STARZ and last, but not least, The Walt Disney Studios.

Other leading studios will be announced at the actual launch of the service, at a to-be-determined date.

The NOOK Video service will offer downloading and streaming of the purchased digital video content. Any content bought will be stored in the NOOK Cloud, so not only can a user enjoy the new service on their e-reader, but also on other devices that will support the NOOK Video app, which is set to debut along with the service itself. This will ensure that a user has different platforms on which to effortlessly enjoy their purchases from the NOOK Video service.

CEO of Barnes & Noble, William J. Lynch had this to say about the new service’s launch:

As one of the world’s largest retailers of physical video discs and digital copyrighted content, our new NOOK Video service will give our customers another way to be entertained with a vast and growing digital video collection, as part of our expansive NOOK Store. The launch of our new digital video service with our long-time studio partners allows us to bring award-winning current and classic movies, TV shows, documentaries and more to millions of customers’ screens, coming soon.”

A sample selection of media in the NOOK Video catalog contains famous shows such as Dora The Explorer, Breaking Bad, Awkward, The Walking Dead, The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, Game of Thrones and True Blood.

Blockbusters like The Dark Knight, The Avengers, Brave, Toy Story 3, The Hangover and the Harry Potter collection will also be available.

The company has not yet listed a point of sale for any of the content mentioned.
