Breaking Bad fans have scored a victory of sorts – bumping “The Hunger Games” from the top spot on Amazon’s “Best Sellers in Movies & TV” chart.
Breaking Bad Season 5, Ep. 6, “Buyout,” is now number one at Amazon. The episode first aired last Sunday, August 19, on AMC, before being released on Amazon’s Instant Video service.
“The Hunger Games” is now ranked second and third (Blu-ray and DVD sales are listed separately) on Amazon’s Movies & TV chart. The film, which was just released last weekend, still tops the Movies (only) chart.
Breaking Bad dominates much of the rest of Amazon’s Movies & TV chart. Ranking number 6 is Breaking Bad Season 5, Ep. 5 “Dead Freight.” Number 7 is Breaking Bad Season 5, Ep. 1 “Live Free or Die.” Number 8 on the chart is Breaking Bad Season 5, Ep. 2 “Madrigal.”
Coming in at number 11 is Breaking Bad Season 5, Ep. 4 “Fifty – One.” Ranked number 12 is “Buyout” in HD. At number 13, the last one in the top 20, is Breaking Bad Season 5, Ep. 3 “Hazard Pay”.
It’s a similar scene over on the iTunes TV shows chart – where “Buyout” is number one, and “Live Free or Die,” “Dead Freight,” and “Madrigal,” take up spots 11 through 13.
Amazon sells individual episodes of Breaking Bad through their Instant Video streaming service for $1.99. In high definition, they cost $2.99. iTunes sells individually streaming episodes for $2.99.
The popularity of the series on Amazon’s and iTune’s streaming services may very well be related to the ongoing dispute between AMC and DISH, which still have not settled on a contract for AMC to be carried on DISH’s satellite network. DISH subscribers, who had gotten hooked on the series when it was available through DISH, were left out in the cold when the previous contract expired on June 30. We may see AMC’s “The Walking Dead” appear all over these same charts when it’s third season premiers on October 14th – assuming DISH and AMC don’t kiss and make up by then.
