Cartoons from the 70s, 80s and 90s have taken over Facebook recently leaving many to remember their childhood fondly and others to wonder what is going on with the social networking site.
The latest rage to viral on Facebook is a message insisting that users stop and change their profile picture to a cartoon character from their childhood. Users should not be alarmed by the sudden influx of Smurfs and Rugrats that are filling up the news feed.
The fad has gained so much popularity that it has also been the hot topic on both Google and Twitter. Searches for cartoon characters from the 70s, 80s and 90s have dominated Google trends and the topic has been high on Twitter traffic as well throughout the day.
This fad is said to have begun in November in Greece. The original message asked users to replace all human faces on the social site with those of their favorite cartoons for several days. As the movement has progressed the message has changed several times. The latest touts the movement as a way to draw attention to the issue of child abuse.
This is not the first fad to go viral on Facebook in recent times. The most notable previous trends included one which asked users to replace their profile pictures with one of their celebrity look-alike and also the widely participated in movement to have all women list their bra color in order to bring awareness to breast cancer.
