A wall and roof collapse in a burning building took the life of two firefighters from the Chicago Fire Department and injured 19 others on the 100th anniversary of a fire that killed 21 firefighters and the city fire marshal.
Firefighters Corey Ankum and Edward Stringer were both killed during the collapse as both were inside the building at the time. Ankum had been a firefighter for less than two years and Stringer had 12 years with the Chicago Fire Department.
None of the injuries incurred were life threatening. The fire was reported just prior to 7am on Wednesday. The cause is still under investigation. The fire had been contained and firefighters were searching for homeless people when the wall collapsed and brought the roof down with it.
