China’s New Stealth Fighter Confirmed [video]

Robert Gates, the United States Defense Secretary, has confirmed that China has indeed developed a stealth fighter.

Gates relayed the message to the U. S. press that Chinese President Hu Jintao announced on Tuesday that China had developed and successfully ran the country’s first test flight of their stealth fighter jet.

Gates went on to give some details of the first flight of the new J-20 stealth prototype jet, suggesting that this latest development dramatically narrows the difference between the U. S. military capability and that of China.  The Defense Secretary told reporters, “I asked President Hu about it directly, and he said that the test had absolutely nothing to do with my visit and had been a pre-planned test…”

Blogs in China were ablaze with photos of the jet’s first test flight along with a leaked video of the jet that looks mildly like a “ufo” (below).  China, for its part, felt the need to put the world at ease suggesting that despite this major advance in technology, that the country’s military capability was still “decades” behind that of the U. S. and allies of the U. S.  These worlds, however, do not line up with the fact that China is in the midst of a large-scale modernization and expansion of its military capabilities, concentrating large amounts of military spending on sea, air, and space-based technology.
