Cree Recalls LED Replacement Lamps For Burn & Fire Hazards

Cree has issued a recall on its LED T8 replacements lamps for potential burn and fire hazards.

The lamps resemble fluorescent tubes and were sold exclusively at The Home Depot to consumers and to commercial lighting customers through electrical distributors.

According to Cree, “Electrical resistance between the spring contact and the printed circuit board (PCB) may cause over-heating due to electrical arcing. The printed circuit board can overheat and cause the LED T8 lamp to melt, posing fire and burn hazards.”

The recalled Cree LED T8 replacement lamps were sold from August 2014 through April 2015 for approximately $22 each.

700,000 of the units were sold in the U.S. and11,500 units were sold in Canada.

Recalled LED lamps have “BT848 Series Lamp” printed directly on the lamp or on a white label attached to the lamp along with the product number. The lamps are 48” long and white in color with a cylindrical shape.

To determine which units are affected by the Cree recall, consumers will need the lamp’s product number and date code.

Consumers can find a four-digit date code printed on the LED lamp under the part that reads “Compatible with Instant Start, Rapid Start and Dimmable Electronic Ballasts,” according to the company.
