After becoming one of Hollywood’s top leading men, Ryan Gosling is now exploring the other side of movie making as a writer and director, but the reception has not been kind. Early reviews of Gosling’s movie Lost River have been anything but positive.
Gosling wrote and directed Lost River, which revolves around a single mother and her two sons, as they discover the dark side of their new town.
The film made its debut at Cannes, and while some critics have pulled their punches out of respect for Gosling, others have not held back their disdain for the movie. One critic called Lost River “an enthusiastic Instagramming session,” while another described it as a “Wikipedia essay rather than love letter.”
British newspaper The Guardian went in for the knockout punch, saying “It is colossally indulgent, shapeless, often fantastically and unthinkingly offensive and at all times insufferably conceited.”
Warner Bros. took the film to Cannes and intended to handle its U.S. release, but following the bad reviews, those plans may have changed, as they are trying to unload the film on an indie distributor.
Lost River stars Matt Smith, Christina Hendricks, Eva Mendes, and Saoirse Ronan, among others. There is no scheduled U.S. release date at this time.
