Your options for watching Downton Abbey via streaming are shrinking.
Amazon announced yesterday that they have secured exclusive streaming rights for Downton Abbey season 3.
But that’s not all. They have also secured the exclusive rights for seasons 1, 2, 4 and (if produced) 5.
As of this week, Downton Abbey seasons 1, 2, and the first five episodes of season 3 are available through Amazon Instant Video.
Single episodes for the PBS series cost $1.99 on Amazon Instant Video. Amazon also offers a season pass in which each episode is purchased automatically at a savings of approximately 5%. Episodes are available to Amazon Prime members at no added cost.
As of right now, episodes of Downton Abbey seasons 1 and 2 are also available through other digital subscription services as well. Season 1 is available on Netflix and Hulu Plus.
But that will change by the end of the year. Amazon stated in their announcement that ‘later this year, no digital subscription service other than Prime Instant Video will offer any seasons of “Downton Abbey.'”
All this is good for Amazon I suppose, but perhaps not so good for shoppers.
Why does Amazon love Downton Abbey so much? Because seasons 1 and 2 are the most watched seasons of all time on their service, according to the company.
What do you think of Amazon’s Downton Abbey grab? Where you hoping to watch episodes on Netflix or Hulu Plus…. or is this a good excuse to finally buy Amazon Prime?
