Droid 2 and Blackberry Torch Release With Little Fanfare

Droid X and BlackBerry Torch

When the iPhone released in June, the 2 million customers who lined up to grab one made it the largest electronics launch in history.

So hopes were high for another big day on Thursday, when Motorola released the Droid 2, and Blackberry released the Torch.

Stores prepared for early morning lines, and news outlets had stories about sell outs pre-written.  But the lines did not materialize, and stock was abundant at stores throughout the country all day long.

S0 what happened?

The Motorola Droid 2 is the next generation of the original Droid, which outsold the original iPhone. But this round obviously went to the iPhone 4.  Beating the Droid 2 to the gate of this summer’s launches were the  iPhone 4, the HTC EVO 4G, and Motorola’s own counterparts, the Droid X and HTC Droid Incredible.  It may be that the Droid 2 launch just came too late on the calendar to create much excitement.

As for the BlackBerry Torch – it’s features make it the best BlackBerry that RIM has released to date. But that may not be enough to generate big sales on its first day out. It is exclusively available through AT&T, and at the same price as the iPhone 4. That means consumers will need to make a side by side choice between the two.  iPhone 4 will likely appeal to new and/or tech savvy smart phone users. The Torch will appeal to loyal BlackBerry users.  A large audience for sure… but also a more conservative, business oriented, one.  BlackBerry users are more likely to replace their current devices as their contracts come due, rather than run out and grab them on the same day that they are released.
