Ed Sheeran released his second studio album “X” (pronounced “multiply”) in April, and it shows the singer-songwriter moving in several new directions.
His lead single “Sing” was his first to hit number one in the UK and demonstrated that while his strength is soft love songs, Sheeran can also deliver a powerful melody.
The album also included “All of the Stars” which was featured on the soundtrack for “The Fault in Our Stars” and the deluxe version included “I See Fire” from the soundtrack for “The Hobbit: the Desolation of Smaug.”
The vast majority of the album is still ballads, but he also presents two songs more in the style of “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You” from his last album that feature Sheeran rapping (or as Sheeran says, singing “with flow”). These are “The Man” and “Take it Back,” which is only available on the deluxe version of the album.
The themes are slightly different, with a few songs showing Sheeran’s anger at past girlfriends and the troubles of being in a relationship while being famous. His maturity over time comes through his lyrics clearly.
Great things are definitely in store for this singer as his style develops over time, cannot wait to see where he goes from here!
