Graceland is celebrating Elvis’ birthday this month as well as a 60th Anniversary Celebration of Elvis’ break-out year in music, television and film.
From January 7-10, 2016, Graceland will be holding special events featuring a new exhibit, guest speakers and an auction.
Starting at 9:00am CST on January 7, the new Elvis in Hollywood VIP Exhibit opens at Graceland. Tours will share the story of how Elvis transitioned to the movie screen and will feature Hollywood artifacts, personal scripts, Elvis memorabilia and rare behind-the-scenes photos.
The Auction at Graceland will begin at 7:00pm CST on January 7, 2016 and give bidders a chance to win authentic Elvis memorabilia. Over 120 authenticated items are up for auction—among them is Elvis’ 1969 Custom Gibson Ebony Dove guitar that he played at the Aloha From Hawaii concert televised worldwide in 1973 and many other concerts. Estimated at a value of $300,000 to $500,000, it’s considered one of the most acclaimed guitars in music history.
Other authenticated artifacts at 2016’s Auction at Graceland include:
• A 1958 handwritten two-page letter Elvis wrote to his friend Alan Fortas while he was stationed in Germany, estimated between $30,000 – $50,000
• The gold-toned microphone & cord used on stage by Elvis at the International Hotel in Las Vegas in 1969, estimated between $10,000 – $15,000
• The reel-to-reel original recording of the Louisiana Hayride show in which the famous phrase “Elvis has left the building” was first uttered by Horace Logan, estimated between $10,000 – 15,000
• Complete Elvis Presley Concert Film from the Memorial Auditorium Show in Buffalo, NY – Shot by Elvis on Tour Director Robert Abel. Estimate: $25,000 – 35,000
• Gold, Diamond and Rock Crystal Quartz Ring Gifted by Elvis Presley to Linda Thompson. Estimate: $15,000 – 20,000
• Elvis Presley 14K “TCB” Necklace Gifted to Bodyguard Sam Thompson. Estimate: $12,000 – 15,000
• 1970s Elvis Presley “TCB” Nautic Neostyle Prescription Sunglasses: Estimate: $12,000 – 15,000
According to a news release, “all of the items included in the auction have been thoroughly authenticated by Graceland Authenticated, the Graceland affiliated authentication and appraisal service for collectors and fans.”
On Friday, January 8, fans can watch the Elvis Birthday Proclamation Ceremony at 9:30am CST on Graceland’s North Lawn. Beginning at 10:30am, all visitors can enjoy complimentary birthday cake and coffee at the Chrome Grille in Graceland Plaza.

The celebration continues throughout the weekend with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra playing Elvis love songs on Saturday, January 9 and a Hound Dog Tour departing at 1:00pm Sunday, January 10 from BB King’s Blues Club on Beale Street.
