Embassies in Rome Hit by Bomb Attacks

Rome, Italy, was hit last night by bombs that exploded at the Swiss and Chilean embassies. Unfortunately these attacks came exactly when the officials were faced with a fear that they might appear. The bombings basically blindsided everyone.

The Swiss embassy was hit by a parcel bomb, which was delivered through a simple package. The explosion took place when a worker opened it. Unfortunately that person was seriously injured.

No claim of responsiblility has been received, and the prosecutor’s office in Rome opened a special investigation. The stated reason was “suspicion of an attack with terrorist aims”. According to Corriere della Sera there are some leads but nothing concrete. Authorities believe that they might be faced with an eco-terrorist movement or an insurgent anarchist group.

To make matters even worse, there were also 2 false bomb alerts that were issued at Rome’s government offices. Sources in the police department stated that there was one fake bomb that included metal pipes and antennas (thus looking genuine) that was found in the Rome metro system, in an empty train carriage. Police consider that a threat might have been issued before the attacks.
