Lately, a new chain letter hoax has been circulating the pages of Facebook. From the United States, to the United Kingdom, to Africa and Spain, this highly false rumor has been upsetting Facebook users worldwide… That Facebook will now be charging users for membership.
Facebook users have been spreading the hoax like wildfire, following the advice that the chain letter gives in a hopeful attempt to stop Facebook from charging for membership.
The “advice” comes in the form of one or both of the following messages:
“FACEBOOK JUST RELEASED THEIR PRICE GRID FOR MEMBERSHIP. $9.99 PER MONTH FOR GOLD MEMBER SERVICES, $6.99 PER MONTH FOR SILVER MEMBER SERVICES, $3.99 PER MONTH FOR BRONZE MEMBER SERVICES, FREE IF YOU COPY AND PASTE THIS MESSAGE BEFORE MIDNIGHT TONIGHT. WHEN YOU SIGN ON TOMORROW MORNING YOU WILL BE PROMPTED FOR PAYMENT INFO…IT IS OFFICIAL IT WAS EVEN ON THE NEWS. FACEBOOK WILL START CHARGING DUE TO THE NEW PROFILE CHANGES.”

IF YOU COPY THIS ON YOUR WALL YOUR ICON WILL TURN BLUE AND FACEBOOK WILL BE FREE FOR YOU. PLEASE PASS THIS MESSAGE ON IF NOT YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BE DELETED IF YOU DO NOT PAY.”
This is the second version of an old Facebook hoax that was released earlier this year.
Facebook has even tried to calm users down by putting on Facebook’s main login page: “It’s free and always will be.”
The social networking giant is expected to make $4.27 billion in revenue this year, 89 percent of which will come from advertising. Facebook makes nearly all of its revenue from the ads viewed and clicked by its 800 million active users. Facebook has no need to charge users for membership, the revenue it makes from ads is plenty!
