Facebook May Launch New Phone With Extra Functions Button Next Week!

Today Facebook sent out press invitations for a media event to take place at 10:00 am (PST) Thursday, April 4th, at 1 Hacker Way, in Menlo Park.

The invitation says ‘come see our new home on Android’.

The words have sparked speculation in the blogosphere, and many authoritative sources, such as 9to5Google and TechCrunch, are confident that the social giant is going to unveil a new Android based Facebook phone.

According to John Constine of TechCrunch, a source informed them the social network would reveal an altered Android OS running on HTC. It’s said not be a full-on rewrite on Android, but a ‘flavor’ that will have all sorts of extra Facebook functionality built in.

Mark Gurman, from 9to5Google, quotes ‘people familiar with development of the handset’s marketing campaign’, as saying the focus of the ads is on potential users and users of the device, rather than hardware or software specs.

The Facebook phone is rumored to be like an iPhone, with a Home button at the bottom and rounded corners. It’s going to have a large display and that all important extra functions button, said the sources.

However, it’s not confirmed that the media event will be about a Facebook phone. Facebook has an Android app as well.

It would also be interesting to see how much attention a Facebook phone would get if it’s launched within the next two months, as Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5S are just around the corner.
