Despite being cancelled in New York and other cities this year, Fashion’s Night Out is still going strong across the globe starting tonight.
Created in 2009, the event was organized by American Vogue editor Anna Wintour to encourage spending on fashion during the recession and was planned to coincide with Fashion Week.
Retailers and designers stayed open later and enticed fashion buyers with everything from cocktails and live music to special offers and discounts.
The event was cancelled earlier this year after last year’s event in New York was troubled by some violence. In addition, designers found it incredibly hectic to organize Fashion’s Night Out during the same time as Fashion Week.
That hasn’t stopped the rest of the world from enjoying the fashion festivities though.
Nineteen countries, not counting the United States, are participating in the event both this month and next according to the Conde Nast site. A list of countries and dates can be found here.
The usual American fashion hotspots other than New York, such as Miami, L.A., and Chicago, do not appear to be hosting official Fashion’s Night Out events for 2013.
The Gallery in L.A. does have an event scheduled for the evening though complete with a runway show, DJ, open bar, and VIP lounge.
In D.C, the Washington Post has listed that Willow Fashion and Fia’s Fabulous Finds are hosting a fashion show and fall fashion preview as well as offering special giveaways and a sale.
Smaller towns seem to be embracing the event on their own without the corporate backing previously provided by Vogue and other sponsors.
Savannah, Georgia is blocking off Broughton Street to make it pedestrian friendly and to accommodate two runways for fashion shows, live DJs, entertainment, and food. Retailers will be offering giveaways and holding special events for the evening. Details can be found at savannahsfashionnight.com.
The historic district of Manayunk in Northwest Philly is celebrating its fashion scene with entertainment including live DJs, wine and food, as well as special sales and offers for shoppers. More information is available at manayunk.com
Bar Harbor, Maine is hosting its third annual Fashion Night Out. Downtown merchants will be hosting events in-store and participants are encouraged to dress up. Many of the merchants will be offering specials for those that don fancy clothes. In addition to a fashion show, Bar Harbor’s evening features giveaways, jewelry, art, dancing, music, food and wine tastings, carriage rides, and home décor. Details are available at fashionnightoutbarharbor.com.
