Universal Pictures has just released the first trailer for their upcoming adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey.
Based on the steamy, controversial novel by E.L. James, Fifty Shades of Grey is the story of a literature student named Anastasia Steele, whose sexuality is awakened when she meets an alluring billionaire named Christian Grey. They begin a dalliance that eventually reveals his need for control, as well as his very unusual fetishes.
The film version stars Dakota Johnson (daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith) as Anastasia and Jamie Dornan as Christian. The cast also includes Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden, Jennifer Ehle, and pop singer Rita Ora. It was directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, whose most well-known previous credit was the John Lennon-as-a-youth drama Nowhere Boy.
The trailer starts off as though the film is a normal romantic drama, only to give flashes of the more explicit material toward the end. It is also notable for featuring a sultry new version of Beyoncé’s hit song “Crazy in Love.”
Fifty Shades of Grey will be released on Valentine’s Day 2015.
