Free cell phone service is now available through a company called FreedomPop.
The free cell phone plan includes 200 minutes of free talk time, up to 500 text messages, 500MB of free 3G/4G data, and unlimited texting & calling between FreedomPop subscribers each month.
FreedomPop will also be offering a $7.99/month plan that includes 500 minutes of talk time, unlimited texting, 500MB of data and unlimited calls and texting between FreedomPop subscribers each month.
Their unlimited plan will cost $10.99/month and include unlimited talk time, unlimited texts, and 500MB of data.
Tony Miller, Head of Marketing and Communications for FreedomPop, told Consumer Press there will be “no activation fee and no additional costs” for the plans. No contract is required either.
There is one limitation for early adopters though. For now, the service is only compatible with an HTC Evo smartphone.
FreedomPop is selling refurbished HTC Evo’s for $99.
According to Miller, FreedomPop plans to add more phones to the compatibility list and eventually any Sprint phone will work with the new cell phone plans from FreedomPop.
Why just Sprint phones?
Because calls made on the service will be carried as VOIP calls through Sprint’s 3G/4G data networks.
Miller told CP that the service has been tested extensively and that “testers seem to love it, [we are] getting great feedback so far and have been able to address 99% of the negative issues identified.”
The free cell phone plan is available nationwide starting today. It can can be ordered through FreedomPop’s site.
It looks like this service will be a ground breaker when it comes a low cost alternative to high priced contract plans.
